Mercedes-Benz Series 116 (designation "W 116") was a classic Mercedes-Benz Series comprised of five models, all sedans in the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
The first model was the Mercedes-Benz 280 S (designation "W 116 V 28"). It ran from 1972 to 1980. The car incorporated an in-line, six-cylinder engine paired with either a four-speed or five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic transmission; together, they produced 160 horsepower (from January 1976, 156 horsepower).
The second model was the Mercedes-Benz 280 SE (one designated "W 116 E 28"). It ran from 1972 to 1980 as well. It also featured an I6 engine and the same transmission options, but output was rated at 185 hp (from February 1976, 177 horsepower, and from April 1978, 185 horsepower).
The third model was the Mercedes-Benz 300 SD. It was designated "W 116 D 30 A," and the brand offered it between 1978 and 1980. The car had an in-line, five-cylinder engine paired with a four-speed automatic transmission, and it produced 111 horsepower (from October 1979, 121 horsepower).
The fourth model was the Mercedes-Benz 450 SE, designated "W 116 E 45" and running between 1972 and 1980. The car featured a V8 engine mated to a three-speed automatic transmission, and it could put out 225 horsepower (from November 1975, 217 horsepower, and from April 1978, 225 horsepower once more).
The fifth model was the Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL, which was offered between 1973 and 1980 and was designated "V 116 E 45." It, too, had a V8 engine and three-speed auto transmission, plus the same horsepower specs during the same periods as its 450 SE sibling.
