The third model was the Mercedes-Benz 280 S. It succeeded the Mercedes-Benz 250 SE and ran from 1968 to 1972. The fourth, the Mercedes-Benz 280 SE succeeded the Mercedes-Benz 300 SE, debuting in 1968 and running until 1972. It came in several variants: one with a standard wheelbase; another with a long wheelbase, which was available until late 1969; and 280 SE 3.5 and 280 SE 4.5 models, offered in 1971.
The fifth and final model, the Mercedes-Benz 280 SEL, released in 1965 and was available until 1972. It was offered in four variants: a "base" 280 SEL model, which the long-wheelbase Mercedes-Benz 280 SE in 1969 and was an option until 1971; a 280 SEL 3.5 and a special-protection-version 280 SEL 3.5, offered in 1971 and 1972; and a 280 SEL 4.5, available during 1971 and 1972.
