The "300 SD" in Mercedes-Benz 300 SD refers to three models in several of the marque's series.
The first, a "base" 300 SD sedan, ran from 1978 to 1980. It was a member of Mercedes-Benz Series 116 (W 116 D 30 A) and part of the nascent Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The car incorporated a four-stroke, in-line, five-cylinder diesel engine with an exhaust turbocharger, a single overhead camshaft, and a Bosch five-plunger injection pump. Paired with a standard four-speed automatic transmission, it could produce 111 horsepower. After 1979, engine output rose to 121 horsepower.
The second, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SD Turbodiesel, debuted in 1980 and ran until its discontinuation in 1985. It was also a sedan and a member of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, except one in Mercedes-Benz Series 126 (W 126 D 30 A). It, too, had a four-stroke diesel I5 engine, and turbocharger, cam, fuel-injector, and transmission specs were similar. However, the car achieved 121 horsepower at the outset, until late 1982, when output got a bump to 125 horsepower.
The final model, another base-style 300 SD, was available for the 1991, 1992, and 1993 model years. It was a sedan in Mercedes-Benz Series 140 (W 140 D 35 A) and also in the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. This car, however, had a turbocharged four-stroke, inline-six diesel engine with an emissions control system containing an oxidizing catalyst. Cam and gearbox specs may have been the same, but the injection pump was now a Bosch six-plunger type. Engine output was 150 horsepower. In 1993 and 1994, the model became the Mercedes-Benz S 350 Turbodiesel.
