The Mercedes-Benz 114 Series models sold between 1968 and 1976 were offered as part of a range of vehicles which in later generations would become known as the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Called “Slash Eight” models in reference to the year of their debut in 1968, this range included several sedans and coupes sold until 1973. Among those were the Mercedes-Benz 230, 250, and 280.

In 1973 the series underwent a significant revision, improving overall safety and incorporating design details from the new S-Class series 116. The 230, 250, and 280 models were sold up until 1976. Available engines during the line's career included several in-line, six-cylinder models, each mated to four- or five-speed manual or automatic transmissions and putting out 120, 130, 150, 160, or 185 horsepower, depending on the model. There were also long-wheelbase variants offered, and several chasses were available for building custom special-purpose car bodies -- for instance, for hearses and ambulances.
