The Mercedes-Benz 280 SEL nomenclature indicates several models across multiple Mercedes-Benz series.
One is the 280 SEL in the greater Mercedes-Benz Series 108 (W 108 E 28), which ran from 1969 to 1971. It incorporated a four-stroke, in-line, six-cylinder engine with one overhead camshaft and a Bosch six-plunger fuel-injection pump, and you could choose to mate it to either a four- or five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed auto. Together, they produced 160 horsepower.
Two others are the 280 SEL 3.5 and its special-protection-version sibling, both part of the Mercedes-Benz Series 108 (W 108 E 35/1). They were available in 1971 and 1972, and both had four-stroke V8 engines capable of 200 horsepower when paired with either a four-speed manual or a four-speed auto transmission. Other features included a single overhead camshaft per cylinder bank and Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection.
Yet another is the 280 SEL 4.5, a car in Mercedes-Benz Series 108 (W 108 E 45) and one that also ran from 1971 to 1972. It, too, had a four-stroke V8, but got 198 horsepower when paired with its sole transmission option, a three-speed automatic. Camshaft and fuel-injector specs were similar.
The final two are part of Mercedes-Benz Series 116 and Series 126, respectively (V 116 E 28 and V 126 E 28, respectively); they ran from 1974 to 1980 and 1980 to 1985 respectively. The first had a four-stroke I6 engine capable of 177 horsepower or 185, depending on the year, plus two overhead camshafts and either Bosch D-Jetronic or Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injectors, depending on the year. The engine mated to either a four- or five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed auto. The second had similar engine, cam, fuel-injection system, and gearbox specs, except that it achieved 185 horsepower.
