The Mercedes-Benz 280 S was a model in the Mercedes-Benz Series 116 line, one that debuted in 1972 and was offered until 1980. It replaced the Mercedes-Benz Series 108 and Series 109 lines. More specifically, though, it stands out as one of the first Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedans.

The car had a 2.8-liter, in-line, six-cylinder engine that came in two variants: one capable of 156 horsepower and the other producing 160 horsepower. You could get either a four- or a five-speed manual transmission, and a four-speed auto transmission was available. Features ranged from a double-wishbone front suspension to a choice of steel or alloy wheels.

The model had many safety improvements, too. For one, its fuel tank located above the rear axle, which better protected it in the event of a collision. Secondly, it had a heavily padded dashboard, along with a four-spoke security wheel that had both an impact absorber and impact cushioning. Other enhancements included a stiffer roof frame, high-strength pillars for both the roof and doors, and better door reinforcement in general, not to mention better crash energy absorption.
