450SEL

The Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL was a sedan that appeared early in the history of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. It was a part of the greater Mercedes-Benz Series 116 line of cars, those which replaced Mercedes-Benz Series 108 and 109. The model itself, comprised of a "base," a special protection version, and a 450 SEL 6.9, ran from 1972 to 1980.

The base 450 SEL came out in 1973, sporting a V8 engine and a three-speed automatic transmission, which, together, produced 225 horsepower. A 217-horsepower engine was briefly available for the car between 1975 and 1978.

The special protection version had the same specs, as did the 450 SEL 6.9, which debuted in 1975 -- that is, the same, except for the output rating, which was 286 horsepower. All models, however, had wheelbases extended over their siblings by 100 mm, to 2960 mm. Other features included a hydro-pneumatic suspension with a level control system, a central locking system, air conditioning, and headlight washers.
