Mercedes-Benz 280 CE represents two models. One, in Mercedes-Benz Series 114 (W 114 E 28), was a "Stroke Eight" coupe; it debuted in 1972 and was offered until 1976. The other, part of Mercedes-Benz Series 123 (C 123 E 28), was also a coupe, and it released in 1977 and ran until 1985.

The former incorporated a four-stroke, six-cylinder engine with two overhead camshafts, plus Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection. It had a choice of either a four- or a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic and produced 185 horsepower. The car was revised in 1973 to include mobile external mirrors that adjusted from the cabin, soil-repellent decorative A-pillar panels, profiled soil-repellent taillights, and a rear-window roof rail. Also, the radiator grille was made broader and set lower, the license plate panel was integrated, the trunk lid got a new handle, and the front end got redesigned.

The latter, featured a similar four-stroke, six-cylinder engine, with similar transmission options, but with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and capable of 177 horsepower. The wheelbase was also reduced by 85mm, a more stable and stiffer-roofed security cell, high-strength roof pillars, and reinforced doors were added, and the front and rear deformation zones were improved significantly. Other features ranged from rectangular wide-band headlights to chromed air inlet grilles in front of the windshield.
