The Mercedes-Benz 109 Series sedans were offered between 1965 and 1973 as part of a range of cars that would soon be known as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Five models were made available during that time frame, starting with the Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL, which incorporated a 170-horsepower, in-line, six-cylinder engine paired with either a four-speed manual or automatic transmission, or a five-speed manual. It also offered an extended wheelbase for increased rear legroom. The Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 3.5, however, incorporated a 200-horsepower V8 and either a four-speed manual or auto gearbox, while the Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 4.5 featured a 198-horsepower, eight-cylinder engine paired with a standard three-speed automatic transmission.

The Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 6.3, though, was presented in the United States in June 1968, quite appropriately at Laguna Seca Raceway. Introduced as a sedan with better road-holding ability, braking performance, suspension stability and maneuverability than any comparable automobile in the world, its actual performance, driven by a 250-horsepower V8 mated to a standard four-speed automatic transmission, proved to be truly fantastic. After exhaustively testing the car, Road & Track magazine called it "the greatest sedan in the world," which "does more different things well than any other car." From the outside, the 6.3 could be recognized by its wider tires, double halogen lights with large parking lamps between the headlamp and radiator grill. Equipped with the air suspension system of the 600 model, as well as air conditioning, radio, leather upholstery, power steering and power windows, it truly left nothing to be desired.
