The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL was a part of the Mercedes-Benz Series 198 line of sports cars that were offered between model years 1954 and 1963. More specifically, it was a coupe and roadster duo in three variants.

The first, 300 SL, was available until 1957. It incorporated an in-line, six-cylinder engine that displaced 2996 cc and put out 215 horsepower, owing to pairing with a four-speed manual transmission. The second, the 300 SL Roadster, was an option from 1957 on. Its I6 engine featured a light-alloy block from early 1962 on. The third, a 300 SL Roadster with a hardtop, was offered from 1958 on. The features of all three ranged from a tubular space frame and gullwing doors to Dunlop disk brakes and mud guards.
