The Mercedes-Benz 230 was part of the Mercedes-Benz Series 110 line, nicknamed the "Fintail Mercedes." It succeeded the Mercedes-Benz 190 and was available from 1965 to 1968. The standard model had an in-line, six-cylinder engine detuned to 105 horsepower, and it paired with either a four-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission.

Three other variants were also available. One, the Mercedes-Benz 230 Universal, a revision, ran between 1966 and 1968. Its engine had a higher output of 120 horsepower. Another, a Mercedes-Benz 230 chassis-only model, was designed for building for special-purpose car bodies, like ambulances and hearses. It ran from 1965 - 1968, with an engine that put out 105 horsepower. The last, a Mercedes-Benz 230 chassis-only model with a long 3100-millimeter wheelbase, also 105 horsepower, was offered from 1965 to 1968.
